For consumers who are new to solar lighting, the following is a brief overview of how most solar lights work today:
1. There is a solar cell which has wiring that is connected to batteries inside the solar fixture
2. When direct sunlight hits the solar cell, a charge is induced
3. That charge is stored in the batteries, thus recharging the batteries
4. At dusk, when sunlight is no longer on the solar panel, a sensor let's the batteries know to come on
5. At night, the solar light is essentially a battery operated light
